VHF National Field Day

VHF National Field Day is a club based portable contest which takes place over the first weekend of July. Five bands are used:-  50, 70, 144, 432 and 1296 MHz. ( If you are listening at home it is a great opportunity to find out how good your QTH is for VHF!)

Use of 240v mains power is not allowed so a big, reliable generator which will run for twenty four hours is a must. Every contact which is made scores 1 point for every kilometre between the two stations. Every point is valuable so local calls are appreciated.

We take part every year for a variety of reasons which include operating our rigs from a very good and electrically quiet VHF location and also having a weekend in the countryside. It can be great fun when all goes well and challenging when it doesn’t! Field Day really does test all our gear i.e. antennas, masts and rigging, as well as our rigs and assorted IT items. It also is a test of our operating skills and at the same time a chance to learn from experienced operators.

“I’ve been contesting now for nearly sixty years and still enjoy working from a good site in the company of good friends.”
